THYROID GLAND - Hashimoto's disease

Description
A portion of thyroid gland which is enlarged; the cut surface shows a nodular pattern and a very distinctive yellowish colouration.
History
This woman, at the age of 58, presented with a throat swelling; we have no record of investigations at that time, but she was apparently treated with potassium iodide tablets for 3 months without improvement. She subsequently came to surgery, when this gland was removed. The histology was that of Hashimoto's disease.
